Simultaneous Research Projects
Overview
The Ripple-funded research portfolio examines how blockchain and digital assets can support responsible innovation, economic participation and new forms of decentralized coordination. The initial research projects explored the balance between protective and innovation-enabling regulation, governance and value creation in blockchain platforms for financial inclusion, and the Internet of Assets, including the economic autonomy of a crypto-enabled smart home.
Approach
The research combines regulatory, economic and governance analysis with technical development and experimentation.
Main outcomes
The portfolio aims to produce research findings and practical frameworks that support regulatory clarity, responsible blockchain adoption and real-world applications.

BI – IE Health & Data Lab

Research Project: Biophysics Neural Networks for Digital Twins: Clinical Trials
Overview
The project develops biophysics-informed neural networks, or BioPINNs, that combine physiological models with artificial intelligence to create trustworthy, patient-specific digital twins. The research aims to model individual patient trajectories, improve clinical-trial design and stratification, and support better treatment decisions.
Approach
The project combines physiological knowledge, AI and patient data to create reliable models and virtual simulators for safely testing treatments before clinical application.
Main outcomes
A proof-of-concept digital twin for clinical-trial design and patient stratification, supported by a scientific publication, open-source software and postdoctoral research, with potential for future industry, clinical and regulatory applications.

Research Project: Impact of Climate Change on Life Insurance
Overview
The project examines how climate-related factors may affect mortality, life expectancy and long-term insurance risk. Its purpose is to translate climate and health data into evidence that can strengthen actuarial modelling, insurance decision-making and industry resilience.
Approach
The project uses interdisciplinary, data-driven research combining climate science, health, applied mathematics and actuarial expertise.
Main outcomes
The project aims to improve life-expectancy projections and inform the pricing of life-assurance and annuity products. It will also support the review of policy values, reserves and funding requirements, while helping insurers develop risk-mitigation strategies and strengthen long-term planning for climate-related mortality risks.
IEX Labs Education
Industry Gateways
IEX Labs Industry Gateways are selective, multidisciplinary learning programs, typically lasting four months, that connect advanced undergraduate and master’s students with leading companies to explore strategic industry topics and address real business and societal challenges.
Co-designed and co-delivered by IE faculty and industry experts, each Gateway examines its sector through business, technology and regulatory perspectives, combining academic learning, industry insight, professional mentoring and direct access to practitioners with an immersive experience at the partner’s facilities.
The Gateway culminates in an applied industry challenge or venture project.
